Uniting Cebu coasts through coastal resource adaptive participatory approaches for full marine ecosystems representation and wise management of coastal and marine environment in Southeast and Southwest Cebu coasts

The Project

Degradation and marine habitat loss are two of the pressing problems of the Philippines. The Visayan region of the Philippines contains high marine biodiversity and productive fisheries that provide a significant amount of food security to coastal communities and also generate substantial revenue from the long standing and growing marine tourism industry.

This resource base is critical to maintain for the well-being of people in the area and to ensure sustainability of resource use and benefits into the future.  In light of threats from unsustainable development in some areas, overfishing and climate change, the Coastal Conservation & Education Foundation (CCEF) with the support of UCF continues to adapt programs to mitigate threats and engage people in the protection and management of their coastal areas and resources.  CCEF thus plans to accelerate its efforts to build coastal stewards for assessment, monitoring and managing coastal resources from an ecosystem approach.

This initiative is the continuation of the recently culminated Our Ocean Program which the Unico Conservation Foundation supported over the last two years.

The Our Ocean funded by UCF for two (2) years addressed the above issues through implementing various strategies which strengthens coastal resource management practices in the Southeast Cebu Coastal Municipalities (Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, and Samboan) with the multi-sectoral support in the community, particularly UCF.

With the ground works done by CCEF for the conservation of Philippine Marine Resources, CCEF should continue its advocacy for a more sustainable coasts with involved communities.

With the help of Unico Conservation Foundation (UCF),

  • Minimum of five Public-Private Partnership established for Coastal Resources Management in Southeast and Southwest Cebu Coasts;
  • Minimum of three upscaling MPA Management Governance Interventions and Training implemented;
  • At least five (5) percent of the total covered municipal coasts are intervened in terms of their marine status and conditions.

The Organisation – Coastal Conservation & Education Foundation

Driven by its passion to create sustainable coasts with involved communities, CCEF continues to develop and disseminate tools, techniques, and research for better marine management. For 23 years, CCEF has been promoting integrated coastal management approach that includes Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) localized enforcement and other participatory best practices. CCEF helps ensure that the local communities improve their quality of life especially those depending on coastal and marine ecosystems.
